A Scripture-Shaped Prayer of Confession

About This Prayer

This prayer is meant to be prayed slowly and out loud as an act of deliberate agreement with the truth of Scripture.

If you landed on this page first, I Believed, And Therefore I Have Spoken lays the groundwork for why a prayer like this exists at all: not as a spell, not as a script for control, but as a way of bringing believed truth openly to the lips.

Father,
I come before you with gratitude, reverence, and faith. I do not come trusting in my own strength, willpower, or ability to make things happen,[1] but I come confessing that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life,[2] believing in my heart that you raised Him from the dead, and resting in the salvation you have promised.[3] Let my faith not remain unspoken. Teach me to agree with your truth, to speak in harmony with what you have said, and to let my mouth bear witness to what my heart believes.[4]

Lord, thank you that your word is not empty, distant, or uncertain. You watch over it, and you are faithful to perform what you have spoken.[5] So today I bring my life into alignment with your promises. I do not want to be ruled by fear, ruled by appearances, or ruled by my own anxious thoughts. I want to be governed by your truth.

When I feel weak, remind me that this life with you is not sustained by might, nor by power, but by your Spirit.[6] When I feel threatened, remind me that no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and that every tongue raised against me in judgment shall be condemned.[7] When I look around and see trouble on every side, steady my heart with the confidence that even if a thousand fall at my side and ten thousand at my right hand, it shall not come nigh me apart from your sovereign hand.[8] When enemies rise, visible or invisible, personal or spiritual, remind me that you are able to cause them to flee.[9] And if you are for me, then no force, no accusation, no opposition, and no fear can finally stand against me.[10]

Father, I ask you to shape my life with your favor. Cause me to grow in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man.[11] Bless me where I live, where I labor, where I go, and where I return.[12][13] Establish the work of my hands under your blessing.[14] Let me eat the fruit of honest labor with gratitude and peace.[15] Teach me to live with diligence, faithfulness, and generosity, so that lack does not define me and debt does not master me.[16] By your grace, make me the head and not the tail, above and not beneath, as I walk in obedience to you.[17] Set me apart as a holy people unto yourself, marked not merely by words, but by a life that bears the evidence of belonging to you.[18]

Lord Jesus, thank you that my identity is not anchored in my failures, my shame, my past, or the enemy's accusations. In you, I am made the righteousness of God.[19] In you, I am a new creature; old things are passed away, and all things have become new.[20] Teach me to reckon myself dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ my Lord.[21] When I am tempted to return to old patterns, old labels, or old chains, call me back to the truth of what you have done. You have raised me up together and made me sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.[22] The One who is in me is greater than the one who is in the world.[23] And in all these things, through your love, I am more than a conqueror.[24]

Holy Spirit, Spirit of truth, dwell richly within me and rule within me.[25] Guard me from confusion, from self-deception, and from the lies that war against my soul. Lead me into truth, and as I know the truth, let that truth make me free.[26] Work in me a heart that not only hears the truth, but obeys it, so that my soul is purified through your sanctifying work.[27] Make me tender toward what is right, alert to what is false, and willing to walk in the light you give.

Father, I bring my family before you. Let my children be taught of the Lord, and let their peace be great.[28] Give me wisdom, patience, and consistency to train them in the way they should go.[29] Let the seeds planted in prayer, truth, discipline, and love bear fruit in due season. Establish your fear, your peace, and your truth in my home. Let it truly be said of us: as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.[30]

And Lord, as long as you give me breath, let my life not be wasted. I ask not merely to survive, but to live in such a way that I may declare your works.[31] Let my days have purpose. Let my words carry truth. Let my life point back to your faithfulness.

You are not limited by what overwhelms me. You are not shaken by what shakes me. So keep me from running ahead of you in presumption, and keep me from shrinking back from you in fear. Teach me to walk with you in trust, in step with your leading, and under the peace of your hand.

I have now spoken what you have said, and I place these words back before you in faith. I wait on you not with despair, but with confidence, because your word does not return void. It accomplishes what pleases you, and it prospers in the thing for which you sent it.[32]

In Jesus' name,
Amen.
